Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches on Friday, October 23, 2026, and Nintendo Switch 2 is part of the day-one lineup. It is the first new Call of Duty on a Nintendo platform since Call of Duty: Ghosts came to Wii U in 2013. Nintendo announced the Switch 2 version in May. It launches the same day as the Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC versions.
Campaign early access on October 16
Players who digitally pre-order the Standard or Vault Edition can play the full campaign a week early, starting Friday, October 16. GamesBeat reported that Switch 2 pre-orders opened on August 26 through the Nintendo eShop. The Standard Edition is also available at physical retailers. Activision's early access announcement lists Switch 2 among the eligible platforms but says physical copies don't qualify. It also notes that start dates are subject to change.
Cross-play and Switch 2 features
The Switch 2 version doesn't split the player base. According to Nintendo, multiplayer supports cross-play and cross-progression with other platforms. GamesBeat lists these hardware-specific features:
- Optional Joy-Con 2 mouse controls
- Gyro aiming
- Switch 2 Pro Controller support
- HDR output
- Handheld play
The release includes the new campaign, multiplayer and the DMZ extraction mode. Online multiplayer requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership and an Activision account. Players had an early hands-on with the version during an open beta from August 28 to September 1, which Nintendo described as the first Call of Duty open beta on the system.

What This Means
After more than a decade of missing mainline releases, a same-day launch with full cross-progression puts Nintendo players on equal footing with everyone else. The bigger test is performance. Infinity Ward and Digital Legends are building this version natively for Switch 2, and how it holds up in handheld and docked mode will decide whether the series stays on Nintendo hardware. Digital pre-order customers will find out first, when the campaign unlocks on October 16.
